No more wire hangers!

I'm calling this little project the 'Mommy Dearest Wreath.' It's easy, fun, frugal, and most important, fast! Seriously I made it in like 15 minutes.
Here's what you will need:
  • 1 wire coat hanger (cardboard tubing removed if any)
  • Wire cutters/pliers
  • 2 long strips of fabric same length and width (or you could use something like a vinyl tablecloth instead of fabric if you wish--these are often found in dollar stores, or at Target in the dollar section)
  • Sewing machine (or a hot glue gun might work if you don't have a sewing machine)
1) Start by untwisting your wire hanger and straightening it out as much as possible. You will not be able to get it perfectly straight, so don't even try :).

2) Bend it so it forms a circle. Bend each end over with your pliers to make a hook shape so that each end can grab the other. You may have to cut some length off of the wire depending on how much fabric you have. I ended up cutting off about 5" of wire, after I put my fabric on, so the wreath would look fuller.

3) Take your fabric pieces (mine were about 4 inches wide and 6 ft. long) and place them so that the unpatterned sides face inward. You will stitch two seams down the middle of the fabric panels, about a 1/2 inch apart. This makes a little space for you to stick the wire hanger through.

4) Place the wire hanger between the two seams you just made. This is where you will be able to tell if you need to A) shorten the wire and make another hook on the end, or B) make another fabric strip to add to the wreath. Also, I decided to leave the edges rough on mine. Depending on the fabric you used, you may not have rough edges, or like me you might want to distress the edges a bit by pulling some of the loose threads.

5) Now you should have a ruffly-shaped wreath! Close the ends by hooking the ends together, then scrunch the fabric over the hooks. I hung mine from my mirror by taking a simple black ribbon, tied it at the top, and hid the knot behind the mirror to hold it in place.

You can change the fabric anytime you want, add accessories, or even attach a few photos with clothepins for a fun effect. If you try this send me a photo and I will share you handiwork on the blog!

Ta for now,

Miss Frugal

  3. You are doing a great job Nora. I read the grumpy person's comments. Someone is a bit unstable. If they don't like something, why noy just move on. Don't let your creative ideas and a great forum for people to share them be spoiled by someone's rotten mood! Cheers!
